Are you dreaming of a tight, glowing skin? Or maybe less swelling and puffiness on your face?
Trust us when we tell you, that getting these results is much easier than you might think. And that is through facial massage.
There are various types of facial massages, performed with different techniques and of course offering lots of benefits for your skin. So let’s have a look what the hype is all about and why it is really worth it.
What are the different types of facial massage?
· Gua sha facial massage
· Shiatsu facial massage
· Anti-ageing facial
· Acupressure
To perform each of the above facial massages, different techniques are used such as cupping, tapping or vibrations.
What are the benefits of facial massages?
1. Anti-ageing and anti-wrinkling benefits
Every kind of facial massage stimulates your skin and helps with improving your blood flow. Skin stimulation works incredibly well in preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
2. Reduces swelling and puffiness
Facial massages such as lymphatic drainage massage release toxins from the skin and help reduce any swelling and puffiness from your face.
3. Helps with under-eye bags and dark circles
We’ve all experienced this problem at least once in our lives. Whether it was after a tough week at work or after a sleepless night, dark circles are usually caused by water retention around the eye area. Any facial massage usually targets these areas and help relieve the problem.
4. Fights acne
As mentioned earlier, facial massages improve blood circulation which helps with fighting acne. Organic facials in particular, are packed with natural ingredients enriching the skin with all the vitamins and proteins it needs to battle acne.
Some people actually swear by an olive oil facial massage against acne, however there is not enough research to support this belief. No matter what type of facial treatment you choose, if you are suffering from acne, make sure not to use harsh exfoliants and motions.
5. Promotes scar healing
If you have any recent scar on your face which is currently healing a facial massage could make the process slightly quicker due to improved blood circulation.
6. Reduces stress
Just like with any kind of massage, stress relief and relaxation is one of the most important benefits.
7. Glowing skin
Facial massages leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated. The products used and the motions performed help your skin absorb all these vitamin rich products better giving you that Hollywood-glow you have been looking for.
8. Improves blood flow
Any kind of motion during a massage improves blood flow, which helps against wrinkling, tightens the skin and helps with the scar healing process. If you’re practising a massage at home, using a jade roller or gua sha is a great way to get started.
9. Helps with TMJ
If your’re suffering from TMJ, a facial massage could help you with inflamed jaw muscles that are causing you pain.
10. Awakens your skin
Products used during facial massages get absorbed quicker and more efficiently. The flow of oxygen also increases, awakening your skin and improving its elasticity.
How to do a facial massage at home in a few simple steps
When it comes to facial massages, you have the option to do it at home and / or visit a specialist. We recommend that you do both. Incorporating a facial massage to your daily skincare routine will work as a basis for your skin to get the most out of a professional treatment. Here’s a simple massage routine you can follow at home:
Step 1: Preparing for your massage
Start by washing your hands. Then, use your regular cleanser to wash your face and pat dry with a soft towel.
Step 2: Applying products
Choose your preferred product, this could be either a serum, an oil or a gooey cream, and gently apply it all around your face and neck.
Step 3: Start by massaging your temples
By starting the massage from your temples, you’ll get that instant hit of relief and relaxation. When massaging this area of your face, it is recommended that you use circular motions for maximum results. Repeat the movement for 2-3 minutes.
Step 4: Moving on to your brow bone
Use your ring fingers to massage your brow bones, while moving from the inner to the outer side. Follow the same movements to massage the area under your eyes, especially if you are experiencing dark circles or eye-bags. Repeat the movement for 1-2 minutes
Step 5: Forehead
Start by applying pressure at the centre of your brows. Then move up towards your forehead, and sideways towards your temples. Repeat the movement for 2-3 minutes.
Step 6: Reach the sides of your face and neck
Use your fingertips and your palms to massage across your jawline from your chin upwards. Then move back down and repeat the movement for 2-3 minutes.
If you have a face roller or gua sha you can follow the same steps but use the roller instead of your hands. Keeping your roller in the fridge for a while before your massage will significantly help you with puffiness and swelling.
From glowing skin and less wrinkles to improved blood flow and less stress, the benefits of facial massages are so rewarding towards your skin.
